This Portable Writing Surface Box was crafted during the Late 19th Century. This piece has so much character and possibly the largest of its kind. The solid walnut construction makes this box exceptionally sturdy and shows a drastic grain throughout. The box opens up to reveal a large double writing surface which is embellished with a green leather top. One side of the leather top area is hinged and opens to reveal additional storage space within. The opposite side displays pigeon hole cubbies and a pen holder which lifts out to a hidden compartment. The side of the box has a large storage drawer. The drawer has a stunning brass pull and shows early dovetailed sides. The top surface of the box is slightly warped, we’ve circled this noticeable area in our photos. The top could be pushed down, although it should be removed and reset if you’d like it perfectly flush. The box opens and closes as it should, although to close the box, you need to make sure the lock lines up with the receiving latch, we do not have the original key to lock and unlock this box, it remains unlocked. This piece is in nice shape for its age, although it does show expected wear including surface scratches, minor chips and finish blemishes.
