This Late 19th Century Portable Lap Desk is undoubtedly the nicest of its kind! For starters, the overall shape of the box when closed offers a sophisticated yet traditional look with a serpentine curved front. It looks stunning while on display from every angle its viewed from. The piece is finished in a burl walnut veneer which shows a drastic grain throughout, the burl practically glows in direct natural lighting. The burl alone makes this piece easy to appreciate, it offers a timeless aspect. Throughout the exterior you’ll enjoy an inlaid Mother of Pearl motif, accompanied by bone. Some areas of the inlay are missing, the motif is so busy that it’s hard to catch. The latched top opens and closes as it should, the original lock is fully intact although there is no key included, the piece remains unlocked. The duel maroon leather tops are nicely aged, you’ll notice the leather is naturally creased with the fold of the piece. Each side of the writing surface is hinged to display a storage space underneath. The bottom writing surface includes a leather pull tab, while the top surface is missing its metal latch to keep the area shut (this is circled in our photos). Additional compliments include double glass ink wells with aged brass tops, a removable pen hull and small pigeon hole storage cubbies. Overall, this piece is in really nice condition with expected wear from age, you will find surface scratches, minor chips and finish blemishes.
