An Oak Carved Drop Front Secretary Desk by Larkin, United States, c.1900. This Secretary is the perfect example of the superior quality Larkin produced out of Buffalo, New York during the Early 20th Century. This would have been one of Larkin’s higher end secretaries advertised in their catalog. This piece shares a lot of the same characteristics as their less ornate drop front secretary which was highly produced. The top shows a handsome carved foliage motif along with a styled beveled center mirror and two floating shelves. The shelves would have had supports underneath on each side, these are since removed from the piece. The mirror is in good shape and is original, mild surface scratches and hazing is shown, although there aren’t any cracks or chips in the glass. The large drop front area is faced with a stunning lions head motif along with an aged brass escutcheon and pull. This hardware is not original, although true to its era and nicely aged. There isn’t a key available to lock the drop front, although the secretary remains unlocked and opens and closes as it should. Within the secretary, you’ll enjoy a series of pigeon holes and storage areas. The backing of the piece appears to be masonite and was added at a later date, there is a crack in the backing which can only be seen if you open the secretary while its empty. There’s plenty of writing space and would accommodate a laptop nicely. The bottom shelves are great for book or file storage and includes a metal truss rod for great support. This piece stands sturdy and was very well made. You’ll notice a deep aged finish which was likely gone over several times within this pieces life. Wear is shown throughout and includes surface scratches, chips and blemishes.
